There were purchases that I *never* used in a game (including entire games). There were purchases I found disappointing in one way or another, and stopped using them (e.g., the WSG, MotP, and all the 2e material I bought). But there was one purchase that legitimately pissed me off, and that was Castle Greyhawk. I'd waited for that to be published for years. I was in Japan at the time, and had a part time job at the Stars & Stripes bookstore, and I saw that Castle Greyhawk was on the release schedule. I was super excited, and made sure to order an extra copy to be put on hold for me. When it arrived it was in shrink wrap, but I could see the cover, and I thought the cover art was...not what I would've expected. Goofy looking. Got it home and started reading it, and I just couldn't believe it. TSR had turned it into a joke. Castle Greyhawk, the premiere, legendary dungeon of the World of Greyhawk. I don't mind an occasional joke module, but doing that to the much awaited Castle Greyhawk was just an insult.
Between Castle Greyhawk and other Greyhawk modules like Gargoyle and Child's Play I decided the TSR of the time was sending a message: "we think Greyhawk is a joke." It was not a message I was pleased to receive.
